Coming Home to Yourself
When I look back over my life, I can see how often it has changed direction in ways I never expected. Some moments were filled with happiness, others with heartache, but every experience has quietly shaped who I am today.
Through these reflections, I've shared parts of that journey—not because I believe my path is the only one, but because it has taught me something about resilience, self-care, acceptance, and the quiet connection between our mind, body, and soul.
These reflections are simply an invitation to pause and reflect on our own experiences.
To live with greater awareness—one day at a time, one moment at a time.
Life will always bring change. Sometimes the path feels smooth and certain, whilst at other times it becomes challenging.
Yet even during those times, we can choose how we respond.
Life brings challenges to every one of us. We all experience times of love and laughter, as well as disappointment, loss, and unexpected change. The key is not to hide from these difficulties but to move through them with courage remaining open to what each experience can teach us
Childhood Lessons
As a child, I was often told that showing my emotions was "self-pity." In truth, they were simply my feelings—hurt, fear, or frustration—but expressing them was not always welcomed.
I also watched the person who taught me this. Although they understood many things, they often became trapped in their own emotions, unable to move forward. It was a difficult lesson for a child, but it quietly showed me the cost of remaining stuck. Even then, I seemed able to find my way back to the things that brought me joy.
Over time, I recognised that some of the hurt I had pushed aside had become part of my shadow. By gently bringing awareness to those hidden parts of myself, I began to understand them rather than fear them. In doing so, I discovered strengths I had never fully appreciated.
Staying trapped in painful emotions can keep us stuck, almost like trying to walk through deep mud. Instead, I gradually learned to channel my energy through grounding, reflection, and conscious living, allowing difficult experiences to become opportunities for greater understanding, clarity, and resilience.
Resilience is not something we either have or we don't. It grows quietly through every challenge we face, every time we choose courage over fear, and every moment we continue, even when it would feel easier to give up.
Embracing Your True Self
Through life's many lessons, I have also learned the value of simply being myself.
As we embrace our true selves, the masks and personas we have worn through life gradually begin to fall away, allowing us to live with greater authenticity, love, and confidence.
I am grateful for the richness of my journey. The lessons I encountered—doubt, control, fear, and judgement—showed me what I no longer wished to carry, while experiences of love, kindness, and perseverance revealed what I wanted to nurture.
I inherited many strengths from my mother, and through life's experiences I discovered how to use them in ways that feel conscious, compassionate, and true to myself.
When I look at my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, I see these strengths continuing. I see resilience, kindness, problem-solving, inner strength, and the confidence to trust themselves. Watching them grow has been one of life's greatest gifts.
Life has challenged me, inspired me, surprised me with moments that felt almost magical, and continually encouraged me to keep learning. If sharing my experiences encourages even one person to trust themselves a little more, recognise their own worth, or believe in the possibilities before them, then these reflections have been worthwhile.
Coming Home to Myself
Personal growth is not one single decision. It is a daily choice.
It is choosing awareness over avoidance, reflection over reaction, and presence over distraction.
By asking myself questions—about who I am, what I believe, and what truly matters—I have discovered greater clarity, compassion, and inner confidence.
To me, reaching a state of grace isn't about being perfect, always calm, or never struggling. It isn't pretending everything is fine.
It's the willingness to remain true to our values, even when circumstances make that difficult.
It's treating ourselves and others with compassion when fear, disappointment, or uncertainty would make it easier not to.
It's having the humility to accept what we cannot change, the courage to change what we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
It's moving through life's challenges with patience, dignity, and kindness. It's remaining gentle in the face of hardship, continuing even when the path feels uncertain, and trusting that growth can often be found where we least expect it.
Coming home to yourself is not about becoming someone new.
It is about remembering who you have always been beneath life's expectations, disappointments, fears, and experiences.
Reflections on My Journey
When I first began writing, I believed I was writing a book.
During months of waiting for appointments, investigations, surgery, treatment, and the uncertainty that comes with a cancer diagnosis, writing became somewhere I could breathe. It gave me purpose on difficult days and offered my mind somewhere creative to rest rather than remaining focused only on fear.
As I continued writing, something unexpected happened.
The chapters gradually became more personal, more reflective, and more like conversations than instruction.
Without consciously planning it, I realised I was no longer writing a traditional book.
I was simply writing reflections.
Looking back, I can see that Jean's Reflections had quietly found its own voice.
Writing has been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey. It has helped me process difficult experiences, celebrate life's special moments, and find peace, creativity, and wellbeing along the way.
I hope these reflections remind you that you are never defined by what happens to you, but by how you choose to respond.
You are capable of resilience.
You are capable of love.
You are capable of finding joy again.
And no matter where life leads you, you can always find your way back home to yourself.
Looking Ahead
The reflections you have read so far began life as chapters for a book I thought I was writing.
As I continued to write, something changed quite naturally. The writing became more personal, more reflective, and more like sharing conversations than writing chapters.
Future reflections will be a little different.
Some may be inspired by everyday life, family, nature, creativity, or something happening in the world around us. Others may grow from memories, conversations, or moments that simply make me pause and reflect.
Whatever the subject, they will all come from the same place—a desire to share honestly, encourage thoughtful reflection, and celebrate the beauty, resilience, and possibilities that can still be found in everyday life.
Thank you for walking beside me through this first part of my journey.
I look forward to sharing whatever comes next.
A Gift Before We Part
I'd like to leave you with a guided meditation.
If it feels right for you, take a few quiet moments to pause, breathe, and simply come home to yourself.
If you wish, you might like to share this meditation with a friend or someone you trust, and afterwards spend a little time talking about how it made you feel.
To Begin:
Find a comfortable position—seated in a quiet space where you won't be disturbed.
Close your eyes gently and let your hands rest comfortably.
Take a slow, deep breath in… hold… then breathe out slowly.
As you breathe out, allow yourself to gently let go of anything that has been weighing on your mind.
This is your time to come home to yourself.
Take another slow breath in, feeling your chest gently rise.
As you breathe out, allow your shoulders to soften, your jaw to relax, and your body to become still.
Feel your feet connecting with the earth beneath you.
Visualise the Space
Imagine yourself in a peaceful place filled with soft light and calm.
The air feels clear & fresh.
You feel completely safe.
Take a quiet moment to acknowledge everything that has brought you here today—your experiences, your challenges, your courage, and your growth.
Now slowly turn your attention towards what lies ahead.
There is still so much waiting to unfold.
New experiences.
New possibilities.
New moments of joy.
Simply allow yourself to be,
Peaceful.
Centred.
Let your inner strength flow.
Your Colours
Soft colourful waves of light begin to surround you.
Each colour carries its own quiet message.
Some feel warm and vibrant.
Others are cool and calming.
Allow yourself to notice whichever colours draw your attention.
Breathe them in.
Let them fill you with clarity.
With confidence.
With understanding.
With hope.
You are simply remembering who you have always been.
Take a moment to notice how that feels.
Speak to Your Heart
Place one hand gently over your heart.
Feel its steady rhythm.
Repeat silently, or aloud if you wish:
I am exactly where I need to be.
I trust the wisdom within me.
I honour my past.
I embrace my present.
I welcome my future.
Allow these affirmations to settle gently within you.
Take a moment to notice how you feel.
Ground Yourself
Focus on your breathing for a few moments, allowing it to find its own comfortable rhythm.
When you are ready, slowly open your eyes.
Notice how your body feels.
Wiggle your fingers and toes.
If it feels right, stretch, move, or even dance to a happy song.
Whenever life feels overwhelming, remember that you can always return to this place within yourself.
